Ten Questions for You in 2010

Most businesses head into 2010 with a healthy dose of uncertainty. I like it. It’s not because I enjoy not knowing what’s coming, if the economy will double dip, or if the banks will need more TARP funds to weather the financial storm.

I like it because where there’s uncertainty there’s change. And where there’s change there are new opportunities to tackle, mountains to climb, and successes to achieve.

As I speak with leaders of professional services firms these days, the big questions looking forward are about fear, risk, and reward. Early last year fear was rampant, few were willing to risk anything, and firms were playing defense to protect their margins by tightening their belts.

This is changing as we speak. I hear it in conversations with leaders, and I see it in their actions. While they might have watched a bit from the sideline for a year or two, many are saying, like Paul Newman in The Color of Money, “I’m back!”

Are you back? Ready to take advantage of the business opportunities available to you and your firm?

Here are 10 questions you can ask yourself to see if you’re prepared to make some hay from the changes all around us.

1. What are your competitors doing (or not doing) because they’re still afraid of failing and waiting on the sidelines?

2. Are you willing to let that same fear not hinder your firm’s success?

3. Where can you provide more value in the market or at your firm than you provide today?

4. Are you ready to approach your own success with hustle, passion, and intensity?

5. What new things are you going to learn this year that could increase your success?

6. Are you willing to let what you learn change how you think, how you work, and how you lead?

7. Are you willing to change your routine, or are you too set in your ways?

8. Where are you planning to invest that could result in a significant, fortunes-changing achievement?

9. What are you willing to risk to realize your just rewards?

10. Are you ready to do what you know it will take to succeed?

Great article Mike. One question I’d add, and one I not only ask myself, but all of my clients is this: What few things must absolutely go right in your business for you to be successful?

What have you believed to be true about yourself and/or your company that may be holding you back from your greatest achievement and greatest potential? Is that true?
